About Less Trailer Loads

Less Trailer Load (LTL) is a means of transporting freight. Carriers of the freight have other alternatives such as Full Truckload Transporters and Parcel Transporters. The difference between these two alternatives is that the parcel carries transport smaller parcels and freight that may be divided into groups that are below 68kg, while the full truckload transporters convey freight that is laden into a semi-truck.

Semi-trucks usually have feet between 26 and 53, and need a bulky quantity of freight for such conveyance to be reasonable.

LTL freight is usually liable to inspection; however, there is some LTL freight that do not get inspected. A LTL carrier could be handled just one time while the transportation is on, or could be handled severally before the end of the delivery is attained.

Usually, the number of times the freight transits is more than that of the Full Truckload Freight (FTL). This is because, the times the LTL transports do not depend only on the distance between the carrier and the payee. Rather, what determines the time are the frames of arrangement of the breakbulks and terminals, operated by the said carrier and the interline partners and agents of such a carrier.

These circumstances can prolong the delivery time frame to 10 days or more. If delivery is to be made to remote localities or farther distances, more days could be added to the transit time.

Using the LTL carrier has some benefits which includes these: freight or cargo can be conveyed for a little out of the total expenses of hiring a whole truck for complete transportation. Also, the LTL carriers provide an availability of a number of optional services like liftgate and residential services at pickup or at delivery. These services are not offered by the FTL carriers and billing for them are usually at prefixed flat fee. At times, it is usually calculated as a rate per hundredweight or pound for a mass based surcharge. Few years ago, the billing was moved to ”cube weight” calculation to add more to the effectiveness of filling LTL trailers.

Shippers that have sufficient amount of LTL freight can decide on using a carrier to directly transport the freight to a break-bulk service of a LTL conveyed. Using an FTL carrier in this case offers a general cost savings, as it travels lesser miles in the FTL carrier’s arrangement and lowers general surcharge expenses.

An added advantage is seen in both product damage and loading cost and there is no need to unload and reload the freight several times. Risks of theft and loses are also minimized since there is no breaking down of cargo on freight loads until they jointly arrive at the break-bulk distribution destination.

Parcel carriers are great competitors with LTL carriers because they also confine carriers to break down larger packages into smaller ones. They traditionally handle items that weigh below 68kg.

LTL carriers enjoy shipments that have the lowest number of handling units, as it lowers handling expenses and dangers of damage during transportation.

Cargoes sent through LTL carriers are handled many times during transportation by separate carriers. LTL freight must be loaded to save it from humidity, scuffing, condensation, vibration. Freight are good to be packaged into pellets or crates. Not every LTL freight are conveyed by trucks only; some carriers use rail or air.
