About EORI Numbers

What is an EORI Number described?

EORI is an Economic Operator Registration and Identification. This is required if you are a person or trader carrying out custom activities in the EU. Since the 1st of July 2009 the Economic Operator Registration and Identification Scheme (EORI) system replaced the old Trader’s Unique Reference Number (TURN). Purchasing an EORI, which is valid throughout the European community, means you can use this number in all communications with EU custom authorities.

When would you use an EORI number?

You would use your EORI number for example when you import or export goods to countries outside of the EU. It can also often be used for the exchange of information between custom authorities and government departments.

Do I need anEORI number?

You will require an EORI number if you are planning to import or export goods outside of the EU. If you are planning on carrying out these activities to Iceland, Andorra or Switzerland for example then you will need to inquire about registering for an EORI number.

How should my EORI number look?

As with any UK Vat number your EORI number will start with a GB and most are followed by a 12 digit number. This number is based on the EO’s (European Operators) 9 digit VAT number with a 3 digit suffix at the end.

What if I have an old TURN number? (Trader’s Unique Reference Number)

If you were a TURN holder then you will have been given an EORI number automatically.

When should I apply?

As soon as you become aware that you will be involved in customs activities outside of the EU you should submit an application for an EORI. Application can take up to 3 working days to process so it is vital that you plan the application in advance to prevent any delays in the processing of your EORI number. Once you have your EORI number you will be able to use it with 24 hours after receiving your notification from HM Revenue and Customs.
